Anderson JW, et al. Obes Res. 2002;10:633-641.
Objective
To examine the efficacy of bupropion SR in enhancing weight loss.
Methods
A multicenter trial involving 327 subjects was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of bupropion SR, an FDA-approved drug used for depression and smoking cessation. The study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled 24-week intervention for weight loss. Additionally, there was a 24-week extension during which subjects in the placebo group were randomized to either 300 or 400 mg/d of the drug. All subjects were instructed on making appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes, which included the use of 2 liquid meal replacements (MR, Slim·Fast) per day for the first 24 weeks and 1 MR during the extension period.
Results
The weight loss achieved with combination dietary/drug treatment represents a major finding in weight management therapy. Of the 327 subjects starting the study, 227 completed the first 24 weeks. Distribution of dropouts was similar across all 3 treatments: placebo, 32; bupropion SR 300 mg/d, 33; and 400 mg/d, 35. Percent weight loss during this period for the placebo, 300 mg/d of bupropion SR, and 400 mg/d bupropion SR groups was 5%, 7.2%, and 10.1%, respectively, of their starting body weights.
Conclusion
Bupropion SR, in conjunction with lifestyle intervention that includes meal replacements, helps sustain weight loss in obese patients.
