Hensrud DD. Obesity Research. 2001;9:348S-353S.
Objective
To measure the long-term effects of dietary treatment with meal replacements on weight loss and weight maintenance in overweight and obese patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods
In this study, 29 obese subjects with type 2 diabetes were evaluated using either a liquid meal replacement (MR, Slim·Fast®) strategy or a reduced-calorie diet (Control).
Results
Significant weight loss was achieved in both treatment groups after 3 months (-6.9 kg (-15.2 lbs.) in MR and -4.3 kg (-9.5 lbs) in Control). Similar improvements occurred in glycemic control, serum glucose, and HbA1c. Body weight and glycemic indices trended toward baseline values in both groups at 1 year.
Conclusion
The weight loss and glycemic control results after following a liquid meal replacement regimen are as good as or even slightly better than traditional dietary treatment for people with type 2 diabetes. Liquid meal replacements also offer convenience and are more affordable than traditional dietary plans.
